Milling Black Powder posted in Pyrotechnics: Just wanted to get a poll on varying options of most efficient yet safest way to mill black powder without a ball mill. I used to use a coffee grinder however the last time I milled some I resorted to a mortar and pestle instead, which was far too much work. I know ball milling is the most common for large quantities.

Now if the OP is wanting fine powder for a rocket engine, I don't know if corned powder will work as well. Another thing, when pressing the milled black powder(to break it with a hammer to make corned powder) if you so choose that method, moisture is always added, both for safety and the integrity of the "puck" of black powder produced.

This article is informative and a good place to start. I haven't tried it yet. I have done the CIA method (alcohol precipitated BP) and it produces powder worthy of respect. I did a small batch (500g) as a test of the method, and found it to be useful powder, infinitely better than green/mortar+pestle stuff, but not close to ball milling.

To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Turn the mill on and come back in an hour. Your nitrate should be light and fluffy. If not, continue grinding it 'til it's fine powder with no chunks or grains.

Have not made black powder since I was, oh, 12. I have a Harbor Freight tumbler with its two rubber chambers suitable for milling BP. (I don't use the small rubber chambers for brass cleaning as I built a larger chamber from 4" PVC that holds more and is easier to seal and open.) Some say "ball mill the BP ingredients using lead balls."
