Turn on the compressor and make sure the machine is connected. Then adjust the flame of the torch. Power tools are not allowed on many welding tests, so it pays to get good at slag removal "the old fashioned way". A grinder/ wire wheel is always nice to have handy, but you should never let the quality of your work rely on having one available. "Excessive tool marks" are also rejection criteria, so go easy with the chipping hammer.

There are no discernible 'fumes' when an Acid/Water 1:3 or 1:4 ratio is used. 1:1 50/50 is way too strong and just a waste of money. The stronger the mix ratio, the faster it will offgas.
